This cast iron waffle iron works well. I seasoned it with old corn oil on the stove top...it took me about 2 days to do this until I had a nice shiny black surface on the inside. If you had time you could do it in one day.
I've used it three times now. I find my first waffle ends up sticking a bit (doesn't that happen with all waffle irons?), but the next ones come out good. It's a bit of a trial-and-error process figuring out how long to cook each side. About 2 mins. on medium heat seems to work for me...
Good iron for the price. Too bad Rome didn't make it in the USA. Americans need to do something with their hands.

This product already has lots of good reviews, so I'm going to focus on the common problem: seasoning.

A long time ago, before pre-seasoned cast iron was available new (and also before I knew it was available from rummage sales) I bought some cast iron pans and tried to season them myself. I was a failure. I had nice slick looking surfaces, but it flaked off after a single use to reveal a sea of rust beneath it. It is my opinion a fear of lawsuits has prevented companies from giving working directions to seasoning pans. The revelation came to me when I realized that out of all my rusty cast iron pans, I did have one that was actually well seasoned and in good shape. It was the one I used for deep frying.

Step one: preheat the oven to about 425F

Step two: wash your new cast iron thoroughly

Step three: put the damp cast iron into the hot oven for at least thirty minutes

Step four: apply a thin layer of oil to the cast iron, and wipe it down with a paper towel

Step five: bake the oiled cast iron for at least an hour (the oven should produce a small amount of smoke)

Step six: cool the pan completely

Step seven: scrub down the pan without using soap

Step eight: repeat steps three through six

Step nine: before use, pre-heat the pan on a burner until it is just barely smoking

Step ten: oil the pan up lightly and cook waffles

The theory of the method is simple. Clean the pan well. Then heat it up to expand the pores before applying oil. The oil needs to go on lightly, and then be polymerized through high heat. The heat needs to be hot enough to smoke the oil, often just above 400F. If the oil is too thick, then it will flake off, so scrub it down to remove problem spots, then do it all over again.

And lastly, deep frying things in pans seems like an ideal way to get a good seasoning in place. Except that doesn't work on a waffle iron.

Rome Industries 1100 Review by simone

I just made waffles from scratch for the first time since childhood. I didn't have nearly as many problems with these as other reviewers. Thank you to the reviewers who discussed their techniques, including cook time, seasoning, etc.

The literature with these waffle irons does describe how to remove the wax and how to season. It's a simple matter: I heated water in my tea kettle and poured it over (be sure the wax can run off--if the pans are flat, the wax will melt, then reset). Next I lined baking trays with foil, turned the waffle irons upside down and heated them in the oven at 350 degrees to ensure that the wax melted off.

I let them cool, placed the halves with cook-side up back on the foil-lined baking trays, liberally applied canola oil, and returned them to the oven for about a half hour. I let them cool down once and popped them briefly back in the oven. Then I got to cooking.

My waffles were not a sticky mess. The times when the waffles stuck a little, I just cooked them longer until they released readily. If your waffles are sticking, they aren't cooked yet. I basically used the waffle recipe that came with these because similar recipes are highly rated on the 'net.

I used these on an electric stove top. Initially I tried about 1.5 minutes per side on medium (5 of 10) setting. However, the waffles didn't really cook thoroughly. I'd recommend 4 or 5 minutes, flipping midway through. Also keep in mind that cast iron can handle high temps without a problem but it holds heat well so you shouldn't need high heat.

These are smaller than they look. I bought one and after I opened the box, ordered a second. If you are making more than a couple waffles, order multiples.

Be careful not to use too much oil on these pans because it can get on your stove, risking a fire. These would be safer and more convenient if they were pre-seasoned (come on Lodge Logic, why aren't you making waffle irons?) and made in the USA.

Do NOT follow other reviewers recommendations to wash these in the dish washer. Once you have seasoned cast iron, it becomes non-stick. You clean cast iron by scraping it with a metal spatula if something really is stuck. Otherwise, just wipe it with a towel or run a dry brush over it. A little hot water can be used to remove anything that might get rancid or give a bad flavor to other dishes. For the most part, water rarely should touch your cast iron. Soap never should (or you will need to re-season). The dish washer is a huge no.
